Processing Information

Judge Wisdom's original classification scheme has been respected and preserved insofar as possible. Panel opinions are arranged by court term, chronologically. Panel opinions are arranged by court term, chronologically. Within each term are two classifications. First are opinions of Judge Wisdom, in alphabetical arrangement. Each is treated as a separate entry in the register and is assigned a separate folder in the collection. (The entry "12:3," for instance, corresponds to the third folders in the twelfth box.) These folders typically contain Judge Wisdom's notes of oral argument, his research notes and/or those of his law clerk, a holograph draft opinion written by Judge Wisdom or his law clerk, and subsequent, typed drafts. Often these folders also contain correspondence among the panel judges on the merits of the opinion. Among these files will occasionally be found an opinion written by another judge. This fact is noted in the register entry. The second series of entries within each court term consists of opinions issued by panels of which Judge Wisdom was a member, written by another panel judge. These are arranged chronologically by the date of the panel sitting, one entry per sitting, cases alphabetically ordered within the entry. These files as a rule do not contain research notes or early opinion drafts. Occasionally they do contain materials from cases in which Judge Wisdom authored the opinion. Often the post-argument positions of the judges are evident from materials in the case files; they are also recorded in the Dockets found at the beginning of each court term. Entries 351 and following correspond to certain 'school cases', arranged in alphabetical order. These files vary in materials contained, as described in the entries. The opinions in some of these cases were written by Judge Wisdom. Certain opinions of the court en banc follow, beginning with entry 451. These are arranged chronologically by court term during which argument was heard, alphabetically within each term. Some of these opinions were written by Judge Wisdom. Also included in these entries are some cases in which en bane consideration was requested, but denied. This fact is indicated in the register. The three-judge district court cases are arranged, beginning at entry 501, alphabetically and without regard to chronology or composition of the panel. The District of Columbia Circuit Court Cases (entries 551 to 555) were decided by panels of that court on which Judge Wisdom sat by designation. The listings under the correspondence and administrative files are necessarily somewhat arbitrary, but otherwise self-explanatory. - Retyped by Lori Jahnke (August 7, 2009) from the register created by Christopher Gobert (April 20, 1986).
